Peter Navarro Convicted of Contempt of Congress

Former Trump Advisor Faces Imprisonment

WASHINGTON -

A jury on Thursday convicted former Trump White House trade advisor Peter Navarro of two counts of contempt of Congress. The charges stem from Navarro's refusal to comply with a subpoena from the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Navarro, who was a prominent figure in the Trump administration's efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, was indicted in June on charges of contempt of Congress. He pleaded not guilty and went to trial earlier this week.

The jury deliberated for about two hours before reaching a guilty verdict on both counts. Each count carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison, meaning Navarro could face up to two years behind bars.

In a statement following the verdict, Navarro vowed to appeal the conviction. He said he was "deeply disappointed" by the outcome and maintained that he believes he was "politically targeted" by the House Select Committee.

Navarro's conviction is the latest in a series of legal setbacks for Trump and his allies who have been charged in connection with the January 6 attack. Several other former Trump associates have been convicted or pleaded guilty to charges related to their involvement in the insurrection.

The conviction of Navarro sends a clear message that those who refuse to cooperate with congressional investigations will be held accountable. It is also a significant victory for the House Select Committee, which has faced criticism from Republicans for its investigation into the January 6 attack.

As the Justice Department continues to investigate the events of January 6, it is likely that more charges will be filed against Trump and his allies. The conviction of Navarro is a sign that no one is above the law, even those who have close ties to the former president.
