Power Outages Reported in Hampton Roads

High Winds and Heavy Rain Cause Loss of Electricity

Thousands of Dominion Power Customers Affected

Thousands of Dominion Power customers in Hampton Roads were without power Tuesday afternoon as a result of high winds and heavy rain. At one point, storms knocked out power to about 28,000 customers across Williamsburg and the peninsula.

A spokesperson with Dominion Energy said between 4,000 and 5,000 customers lost power last night due to the storms. Crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible, but some customers may be without electricity for several hours.

The outages come as a cold front moves through the region, bringing with it strong winds and heavy rain. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Hampton Roads, with gusts of up to 50 mph possible.

Residents are urged to be cautious while driving in these conditions and to stay away from downed power lines. If you see a downed power line, call 911 immediately.

The power outages are a reminder of the importance of having a plan in place in the event of a power outage. Residents should keep a battery-powered radio, flashlights, and extra batteries on hand. They should also make sure they have a way to cook food without electricity, such as a gas grill or camp stove.
