BREAKING NEWS
A Florida man suspected of driving drunk and killing Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother last week appeared in court Monday with glassy eyes and slurred speech, according to reports.
The suspect, 27-year-old Michael Brandon Castelle, allegedly ran a red light in his black pickup truck and crashed into a sedan carrying the Gaudreau brothers in Voorhees Township, New Jersey last Thursday. Police said they found an open container of alcohol in Castelle’s truck after the crash.
Castelle was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated. He is being held in the Camden County Jail on $1 million bail.<
A Tragic Loss
The Gaudreau brothers were both 27 years old.
Johnny Gaudreau was a rising star in the NHL, having scored 18 goals and 50 assists in 56 games this season. He was also a member of the Canadian national team.
His brother, Matthew Gaudreau, was a minor league hockey player who had recently signed a contract with the Stockton Heat, the Flames’ AHL affiliate.
Outpouring of Grief
The hockey community is mourning the loss of the Gaudreau brothers.
The Flames released a statement saying they were “heartbroken” by the news.
“Johnny was a special player and a great teammate,” the statement said. “He will be deeply missed by our organization and the entire hockey world.”
